Hello to the new solvers linked here by Crucinova! You picked a not-so-great time to come on over. For the uninitiated, Crucinova is a new crossword subscription service that launched literally a few minutes ago, and the first puzzle they've posted is a themeless by yours truly. If you, the Crucinova solver, are looking for another interesting themeless in that vein, you might want to check out one of the other themelesses on this blog before you tackle this one.

Anyway, this puzzle is a bit raunchier than the normal QVXwordz fare, enough so that I put an NSFW warning on it. I'm sure you'll agree it's very good, though. Applet under the cut; enjoy.

  2. I have been loving your puzzles. Got to this one and see the clue for 45A. Never seen the show but am still curious on your thoughts about Surveillance Capitalism. - Crotchety Doug

    1. Alright, so, the premise of 45-Acrosses's Extraordinary Playlist is that the title character gains what is essentially telepathy, and begins hearing the thoughts of people around her (as intricately choreographed pop numbers - that's the gimmick) and begins using that information to interfere in the lives of the people around her. OK, not so weird yet, sounds just like one of those quirky hip-and-with-it updates of Touched by an Angel (see also Wonderfalls, Joan of Arcadia, God Friended Me - all shows I think were kind of underrated). The difference here is that Zoey works in Big Tech at a company that's sort of a mishmash of the Big Four (they make Applesque hardware in a Googlesque campus and their CEO is almost literally Mark Zuckerberg), and basically every episode has a B-plot wherein the company works on some sort of device that violates every imaginable privacy protocol. Like, they spend half of the first season inventing what is essentially Google Glass.

I don't think 45-Across's Extraordinary Playlist intends to say "Google's omnipresent surveillance of its users is good actually" because that would require a level of coherence that the show only intermittently displayed over its two seasons (or an understanding of how computers work, which the show never showed even once lol), but it is sort of interesting just how casually the show expects the audience to accept wanton violations of privacy in each episode's A-plot, B-plot, and even the love triangle that each season seems to hang on. It's not a very good show! And I watched every episode of it. :Y
